A Review of the Literature on Online Gambling
Online Gambling has become a major industry with many websites offering a variety of gambling games. These games range from poker to bingo and even sports betting. While some of these sites are operated by reputable companies, others are not as trustworthy. Taking the time to review the terms of each website is essential before playing. Additionally, individuals should always set limits for their online gambling activity and be sure to abide by any age restrictions set in their area.
In the late 1990s, the first online casinos opened, launching the Internet gambling industry. These sites allow players to place bets without interacting with a dealer or other players. However, online gambling does have some risks and can lead to addiction. It can also affect relationships and lead to financial ruin. It is important for individuals to recognize the signs of addiction and seek help before it gets out of control.
A recent literature review examined knowledge about risk factors and protective factors for online gambling among adults. It involved a comprehensive search of three academic databases, including PubMed and PsychInfo, limited to peer-reviewed articles. The syntax for the search was: bing(online, internet, interactive) and (risk factor* or protective factor* or predictor* or correlate*).
A review of the literature indicates that it is necessary to develop prevention interventions specific to online gambling. These should be designed to reduce access, provide social supports, and promote responsible money management. Also, the importance of gender needs to be addressed in order to target and improve interventions aimed at protecting female gamblers.
