Poker is a card game that can be played in many variations, but it’s usually a fast-paced game. It requires skill and strategy, and there are a few basic principles that apply to most games.<\/p>\n
The game starts with one or more players placing an initial bet, called an ante. This is typically a fixed amount of money, but can be raised to a certain limit.<\/p>\n
After the ante bets have been made, the cards are shuffled and dealt out to all players. The first betting interval begins with the player to the left of the dealer, and ends when that player has either made a bet, called “calling,” or has dropped, called “folding.”<\/p>\n
Each betting interval, which may occur multiple times, involves a sequence of bets by the players to the left. The first player to make a bet, called \u201ccalling,\u201d must put into the pot as many chips as was put in by the previous bettor; if they put less, they are said to raise their bet.<\/p>\n
In some variants, a player who has made no bet is allowed to check, which means that they do not put in any chips into the pot and leave the table. This occurs only if no other players have made a bet in that interval.<\/p>\n
